Joint Research Projects on Biochar in Europe

Cooperative projects focussing on Biochar research in Europe that contribute to or are involved in the Biochar COST Action or European Biochar Research Network (eBRN):

REFERTIL (FP7)

Reducing mineral fertilisers and chemicals use in agriculture by recycling treated organic waste as compost and bio-char products
The REFERTIL project will provide strong support for policy makers for the revision of relevant policies, while setting up future common bio-waste recycling targets, common quality standard requirements for bio-waste treatment, compost and bio-char quality and trading requirements. ..more

FERTIPLUS (FP7) - Reducing mineral fertilizers and agro-chemicals by recycling treated organic waste as compost and biochar

Running in 6 countries
FERTIPLUS will take up the challenge to identify innovative processing technologies and strategies to convert urban and farm organic waste to valuable and safe products for agriculture and allow industries to develop projects and provide adequate information on use and quality of the products. ..more

EUROCHAR (FP7) - Development of Technologies for Long-Term Carbon Sequestration

Biochar for Carbon Sequestration and Large-Scale Removal of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) from the Atmosphere
This project concerns a comprehensive life cycle assessment of Biochar production, application, analysis, knowledge dissemination and project management. Eurochar will investigate carbon sequestration potentials that can be achieved by transforming plant biomass into charcoal (Biochar) and added to agricultural soils. ..more

INTERREG IVb: Biochar - Climate saving soils (North Sea Region Programme)

Running in 7 countries from 2009 to 2013
The project concerns BioChar (BC), which is a product of biomass-to-energy processing systems, and has as its aim in raising awareness and building confidence in BC as a way of capturing carbon and increasing soil quality and stability. In order to keep up with international competition it is mandatory to develop and compile a transnational NSR knowledge base which can be... ..more
