ANS call for paper

Geisenheim (Germany), from 28th to 30th September 2015

The third day of the Joint Biochar Symposium 2015 of the EU COST Action biochar and the ANS e.V. is dedicated to the practical use of biochar in environmental technology, resource management, agriculture and (bio)energy production and to stimulating the intensive exchange between practitioners, users and scientists from all EU COST Action countries, as well as international participants.

76. ANS e.V. Symposium as part of the

Joint International Biochar Symposium 2015

“Understanding Biochar Mechanisms for Practical Implementation"

Final EU-COST Action “Biochar” & 76. ANS e.V. Symposium

This “praxis day” (30th Sept. 2015) of the ANS Symposium consists of selected impulse lectures, presentations by experienced practitioners from the EU countries as well as chosen innovative international contributions. (Simultaneous translation German – English will be provided)

A focus will be on poster presentations: Presenters will be given the opportunity to highlight their contribution in short mini-presentations (1-2 min) within their topical group. The posters are thus intended to serve as “condensation locations” for beneficial direct exchange between producers, practitioners and scientists, during breaks as well as during allocated time slots.

Call for Papers:

The ANS e.V. invites producers, practitioners, applicants and scientists to submit their contribution as a short abstract for a presentation or poster within one of the following topic groups. If you are in doubt if your contribution meets the objectives please contact the organizing committee.

Topic 1:
Production technologies for targeted biochar implementation: Shaping biochar properties (“designer chars”) by pyrolysis production conditions and feedstock selection for dedicated use. Targeted uses may encompass: Nutrient recycling and nutrient management, soil decontamination and water remediation, (nutrient) retention strategies, odor reduction, P recycling from sewage sludge, or biochar as an industrial raw material with designed properties etc.

Topic 2:
Biochar use in soils and substrates: Agriculture and plant production (gardening and landscaping, horticulture, peat substitution, composting, and special planting substrates)

Topic 3:
Innovative and unconventional biochar use or cascading-use strategies, ranging from the cascading use in animal husbandry, to biochar use in paper- and char-crete (concrete) or brick production, and as a resource for the emerging 3D printing industry

Topic 4:
Direct and indirect biochar use in bioenergy generation: Co-combustion and co-use of pyrolysis products including heat; biogas yield and optimization of biogas production by biochar use, etc.

Please send your abstract to call(at) The length of your abstract should not exceed one page the template for submission can be downloaded here.

Selected contributions will be printed as extended abstracts of max. 3 pages in the book of abstracts (in English) that is handed to all participants of the Symposium.

Deadline is July 2nd 2015, abstracts arriving later cannot be included.
