Biochar research emerged from the field of Terra Preta investigation, mainly promoted by soil scientists. It is a relatively young field with enourmous increase in related projects, experiments, publications and public interest in the last years.
Charcoal or char is the solid residue from incomplete combustion or pyrolysis and has been used by man for several thousands of years for different purposese, such as for odor reduction, heating or digestive improvement.
Nowadays, Biochar is conceived as a pyrolysis residue of any plant or animal derived organic matter with the intent to apply it to soils. It has received enourmous interest due to its potential for sustainably improving infertile soils and sequestering atmospheric carbon in soils at the same time.
